Sport has been utterly put on hold by the coronavirus. On March 13 Canada Soccer previously announced the cancellation of upcoming home matches for both the Men’s and Women’s National Teams scheduled for British Columbia on March 27 and 31 on Vancouver Island and April 14 in Vancouver respectively knocking another of spring’s signature events off the calendar.
The NBA (National Basketball Association) has suspended its season after a Utah Jazz player tested positive for the coronavirus, a move that came only hours after the majority of the league’s owners were leaning toward playing games without fans in arenas. The NHL (National Hockey League) is following the NBA’s lead and suspending its season. MLS (Major League Soccer) is also shutting down for 30 days because the COVID-19 and the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal have been canceled due to public health concerns.
With the NHL, NBA and MLS temporarily shuttered, some major international sports events scrapped, and all manner of golf, tennis and racing events forced to fall in line as authorities seek to limit large public gatherings that could facilitate the spread of COVID-19, we are entering an unprecedented period in modern history in which the rhythmic distractions of sports are simply gone.
As we observe what these upcoming weeks are going to be like, it is this time without sports in which sports, and those lessons about teamwork, have an important lesson for us all. Sit back and think about the big picture. A small group of individual sacrifices will help in pursuit of an important, larger goal. Win the shift. Win the small battle. I know there is so much of the confusion of recent days has been steeped in the uncertainty about just what, exactly, we are supposed to do about all this. What is the pandemic primer at a time when almost none of us have lived through one before?
Listen to health authorities, and follow the advice of doctors and medical professionals. Take guidance from politicians who are themselves guided by the medical and scientific experts. Practicing social distance, stay energetic, wash your hands. Do not buy 12 packs of toilet paper. (Please.)
